The NWT Chamber of Commerce celebrates its 50th Anniversary — and offers a great time to re-connect and recharge after a traumatic summer — with a day-long conference and dinner in late October.
The 50th Anniversary Conference & Dinner: Blueprint for Building a Stronger NWT on September 29 at the Explorer Hotel will feature several top speakers from across Canada and the NWT, a late afternoon reception with a NWT Business Trivia game, a buffet dinner and a few short speeches honouring past presidents of the NWT Chamber.
Look for swag bags, fun people and hopefuls in the NWT Territorial General Election the following week, who could see this Friday event as a high-profile networking break from constituency door-knocking.

- Indigenous Ownership: Inside the Powerful New Partnerships Reshaping Canada's Major Project Landscape, with Matthew Belliveau
Matthew Belliveau joined the Conference Board of Canada in August 2021 as a Senior Research Associate in the Indigenous and Northern Communities knowledge area.
Prior to joining the Conference Board, Matthew held the role of Executive Director for both Habitat for Humanity Northwest Territories and the Northwest Territories & Nunavut Construction Association. He has also worked as a policy researcher with the Northwest Territories Business Development & Investment Corporation, and as a lawyer in private practice in Alberta, Nunavut, and the Northwest Territories.
- The Power Of Indigenous Tourism, with Greg Hopf
He was born and raised in Denendeh, Northwest Territories, where he learned his Dene culture and value system from his Aunt Celine and Uncle Jim Antoine in the Dene community of Liidlii Kue (Fort Simpson). He built a strong connection to the land, animals, and spirits through hunting, trapping, fishing, and harvesting with his Liidlii Kue family.
In 2017, Greg co-founded an Indigenous tourism company called Moccasin Trails with his business partner, Frank Antoine. Under their leadership and management, Moccasin Trails has won several awards.
Through his lived experience in running an award-winning tourism business to working at a destination management organization in the Thompson Okanagan region, Greg will share his insights on how to successfully develop Indigenous tourism.
Tourism is a positive tool for reconciliation that brings people from different backgrounds together to learn about Indigenous cultures, histories, and stories throughout authentic experiences.
Indigenous tourism is a promising approach to sustainable development, a way for Indigenous communities to support culture and language, generate revenue, create meaningful jobs, increase access to healthcare and education, and conserve natural resources.

In this keynote, Dr. Lisa Bélanger draws on psychology, behavioural science, and neuroscience to empower the audience to take control of their behaviours and daily practices to help cultivate the best conditions to think clearly, make better decisions, be more productive, build resilience, and have more energy.
Bélanger will explain the most effective ways to manage short-term and long-term stress and provide practical exercises with a low investment of time, but significant gains in mental strength. Audiences will walk away with a science-based, personalized habit development plan, incorporating daily routines of small habits that can work for the busiest of schedules.
Award-winning CEO Dr. Lisa Bélanger shows leaders and teams how insights from psychology, neuroscience, and behavioural science can be applied in the workplace to optimize performance, productivity, and innovation. She helps close the gap between intention and action, resulting in long-term change and a greater competitive advantage.
Bélanger holds a PhD in Behavioural Medicine, and is a Certified Exercise Physiologist, a researcher at the University of Calgary, and an instructor at the University of Alberta Executive Education. She is also the CEO and founder of ConsciousWorks, a consulting firm that shows how insights from behavioural science can strategically improve habits of both corporate leaders and their employees.
On-stage, Bélanger has presented to clients throughout North America and across the globe, including Collins Barrow, the University of Alberta, and CEBS Canada. Her dynamic keynotes share practical insights and strategies to help audiences learn how to take control of their habits and, as a result, take control of their life.
Bélanger is the author of two books — Inspire Me Well: Finding Motivation to Take Control of Your Health, and her upcoming release, A Cup of Mindfulness for the Busy and Restless. She is also the founder of Knight’s Cabin, a national charity offering wellness programming to cancer survivors.
